Most Virginia residents who spend time in hospitals are aware that some of the patients have communicable diseases. Although medical professionals, typically, take every possible measure to prevent transmission of these diseases to other patients, occasionally, mistakes are made, sometimes resulting in tragedy. Such was the case when a woman in a different state died, allegedly after contracting Legionnaire's disease from another patient during a hospital stay. Her family has filed a medical malpractice suit, accusing the hospital of negligence and wrongful death.

According to the family's attorney, in Oct 2014, the woman was admitted to the hospital as a participant in a clinical trial to help patients with multiple sclerosis. Only a few weeks after her hospital stay, the 35-year-old woman died after contracting Legionnaire's disease. Her family claims she contracted the disease from another person on the same hospital floor. They say that since the woman's immune system was suppressed, the hospital should have placed her on a different floor.

The plaintiff's attorney has said that the woman was exposed to contaminated water during her hospital stay. Reportedly, the sink in the patient's room revealed Legionella bacteria, and low temperatures and copper ion levels in the water contributed to the bacteria growth. Now, the woman's husband and daughter want to know what happened.

All medical facilities have a responsibility to protect patients from potentially dangerous bacteria. While this is not always possible, medical professionals should at least employ preventative measures as much as possible, and it seems as though this hospital may have neglected to do so. Often, Virginia residents who have endured a similar situation consult with an experienced medical malpractice attorney who can apprise them of their legal options.
