What are some factors in single-vehicle off-road crashes?

Motor vehicle collisions continue to occur for countless reasons, from negligent drivers colliding with each other due to the consumption of alcohol to ice and inadequate sleep. Sometimes, less common types of crashes take place, such as off-road accidents. When people picture off-road driving, they may envision a quiet, outdoorsy area, where the biggest risk is getting stuck. To some, these may not seem as serious as crashes which occur on a freeway or in an area with heavy traffic congestion. However, off-road crashes can be just as dangerous.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, off-road accidents are more likely under a number of circumstances, based on data that was collected between 1991 and 2007. For example, drivers between the ages of 15 and 24 years old were more likely to find themselves in an off-road crash during this period, as were those with alcohol in their system. Speeding, driver fatigue, nighttime driving, and curves on the road are identified as additional risk factors. Moreover, poor weather can cause an off-road crash, from icy roads and snow to rain, fog, and dust.

When an off-road accident happens, those who are in the vehicle may be seriously injured or killed, depending on the severity of the collision. Moreover, it may be more difficult for victims to receive medical care in a timely manner, which can lead to a less favorable outcome. Worse, some of these wrecks are caused by another driver’s negligence, in which case they should be held responsible for their recklessness.
