How many bicyclists are hurt in traffic accidents?

On the road, people face a long list of hazards, such as the reckless behavior of other drivers and traffic congestion. However, some are especially vulnerable to the dangers associated with traffic accidents, such as bicyclists. If you ride a bicycle and were hit by a vehicle, you might feel very lucky to be alive. Unfortunately, these accidents occur far too frequently, and it is important for bicyclists to be aware of the prevalence of this potentially fatal problem.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that nearly 467,000 people were hurt in a bike accident during 2015. Over the same year, these accidents also claimed more than 1,000 lives. When it comes to bike crashes, males and those between the ages of 50 and 59 have an especially high chance of passing away. However, children between 5 and 14 and young people between 15 and 19 have the highest non-fatal bicycle accident injury rate. Alcohol played a role in 37 percent of fatal bike crashes in 2015, whether the driver of a vehicle or the bicyclist had alcohol in their system at the time of the accident.

There are a number of ways that bicyclists can increase safety, such as wearing reflective helmets and proper helmets. However, bicycle accidents are not always preventable, and many have been caused by a driver’s negligence. If a driver has hit you or someone in your family who was riding a bike, you should go over all options when it comes to moving forward. Unfortunately, some reckless drivers have not been held fully accountable for their behavior.
