Basic knowledge about brain injuries, including how they might occur and the different types, may be of interest to Virginia residents. There are two primary types of brain injuries -- traumatic brain injuries and non-traumatic brain injuries.

A traumatic brain injury occurs when a person suffers a serious trauma from an external force, whether an assault, a car accident or a fall. Workplace injuries and sports injuries can also lead to traumatic brain injuries. Closed head traumatic brain injuries are more common than open head brain injuries. In an open head injury, a person's skull becomes dangerously fractured or crushed. The skull is not damaged in a closed head injury.

In contrast, a non-traumatic brain injury occurs from an internal force. When a person is exposed to toxic substances, or suffers from a lack of oxygen, he or she may develop a non-traumatic brain injury. Despite its name, non-traumatic brain injuries may still be tremendously damaging to a person's health. There are a number of potential causes for these injuries. A person who suffers from a seizure or stroke, or who develops meningitis or a tumor may find that he or she will suffer from a non-traumatic brain injury.

Brain trauma, no matter how it happens, can be frightening for the person who experiences it, as well as his or her loved ones. Such an injury may necessitate extensive rehabilitation and therapy, and will likely give rise to costly medical expenses. A person who has suffered a brain injury may be able to pursue financial recovery from the party responsible for the injury, depending on the circumstances of how the injury occurred. It may be wise to seek legal counsel to discuss available options.
