The motor vehicle has become such an intrinsic part of our world that we tend to think of driving as a routine activity that seldom requires much attention. Yet, as any Virginia resident probably knows, every driver needs to be careful when driving a car on public roads in order to avoid fatal car accidents.

This is not to suggest that driving is dangerous at all times, but it can become dangerous if someone drives recklessly or in deliberate violation of road regulations. This can include driving over the legally permissible speed limit, driving in an inebriated state or driving through a traffic light or stop sign. It is important to remember that there may be others sharing the road, including pedestrians attempting to cross at traffic lights.

Also, during a long weekend the volume of vehicles on the road is likely to be significantly higher, requiring drivers to be extremely patient in negotiating crowded streets and in traffic on expressways. The higher chances of a car collision do translate into a higher number of incidents. For instance, during a recent long weekend, there were nearly 500 accidents in Virginia alone.

Such statistics should have the effect of deterring other drivers from behaving similarly, but this is rarely the case. Drivers need to realize that the consequences of their negligence can be highly tragic and cause pain and suffering to several others besides themselves. At-fault drivers can be penalized heavily depending on the circumstances of the accident, and may also need to recompense any damages claimed by the victim.
