Automobile accidents are one of the leading causes of injuries and death in the United States. There are a wide variety of causes, including distracted driving, drunken driving, speeding and generally irresponsible operation of motor vehicles. Certain factors, of course, are often beyond a driver's control, such as bad weather or poor road conditions. Accidents can have a range of outcomes, from minor fender benders to fatalities. In accidents between cars and pedestrians, however, pedestrians frequently suffer serious and often life-threatening injuries.

In one such accident in Martinsville on a recent Saturday night around 10:30 p.m., a pedestrian was injured in a car accident as he stepped off a sidewalk on Fayette Street and into the path of a car. The victim was transported by a Medevac chopper to Baptist Hospital and is expected to recover from his injuries. The driver did not sustain injuries. Police have not filed any charges, but they are continuing to investigate.

Every year, thousands of people die in road accidents in the United States. A much larger number of people are injured and even disabled. Being involved in a car accident can be severely traumatic for everybody involved. While drivers may face penalties such as fines, suspended driver's licenses and even prison time, the injured parties usually find themselves facing huge bills for medical treatment at the same time they lose wages or income because of their injuries.

In the event of a car accident, Virginia residents should remember that victims are often entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering if driver negligence can be proven in court. This often requires a forensic investigation and accident reconstruction, or introduction of evidence from a police investigation.
