It is common knowledge in Virginia that texting while driving is a bad idea. Studies have shown that at normal highway speeds, a car can travel the length of a football field in the time a driver takes his or her eyes off the road to look at their cell phone to read or send text messages.

Despite the numbers and credibility associated with the study, it appears that drivers are still willing to test the bounds of their reaction times, and continue to text behind the wheel. As such, distracted driving accidents are still a problem.

However, a man who had a close encounter with a liquid manure truck may rethink the benefits of texting while driving.

According to a report, the man, who was driving a rented convertible Mustang, crashed into the back of the truck. He was apparently texting when he suddenly looked up and did not have enough room to stop. Fortunately, he was not seriously injured in the crash. He suffered a broken finger.

The man was also fortunate enough not to have ruptured the tanker carring the manure. In addition to suffering injuries, being cited for texting while driving, he could have been showered with cow excrement. Imagine explaining that to the rental car company.

In the meantime, Virginia drivers should be aware that texting while driving is against the law, and offenders could face civil liability in addition to criminal penalties. Those injured by distracted drivers could seek compensation for lost wages, medical expenses, as well as pain and suffering.
