Eating Right to Recover from A Personal Injury in Virginia

Cranwell & Moore P.L.C. Feb. 14, 2023

Those recovering from a personal injury should be sure to pay close attention to what they eat to support proper healing.

No matter how careful you are when it comes to driving, choosing your healthcare provider, navigating someone else’s property or selecting products, there is no guarantee you will not suffer a personal injury in Virginia. While medical professionals can most certainly help you get back to your normal lifestyle after an injury, you can speed the process along by paying attention to what you eat after receiving medical care.

Lean Protein

Protein is essential to helping your body repair itself, which is exactly what you need after suffering a personal injury. It is best that you aim for eating about 40 grams of protein throughout the day, which includes any snacks you might have between meals. Healthy sources of protein include eggs, fish, lentils, tofu, nuts and cheese. You can also sip on protein shakes to help meet your daily quota, just make sure they are not packed with sugar.

Vitamin D and Calcium

If you suffered any broken bones as a result of your injury, such as a slip-and-fall, your go-to food groups will be vitamin D and calcium. Be sure you opt for low-fat dairy and yogurt. To make sure your body takes in all the calcium you consume, be sure you balance your calcium intake with the same amount of vitamin D.

Fiber

Some personal injuries leave you bedridden or unable to move as much as you used to, which can negatively impact your digestion. There is also the fact that some of the medications you take can also complicate your digestion. To keep things flowing normally, be sure you get plenty of fiber in your daily diet. Fiber comes from beans, bran, whole grains, fruit, seeds, popcorn and pulses. Just like protein, you want to divide your daily fiber intake, about 40 grams a day, throughout the day to keep things balanced. You should also make sure you drink plenty of water to help your digestion further.

Colorful Fruits

After surgery, your body might be bombarded with harmful free radicals, which means you will need to combat them with antioxidants. Be sure you eat strawberries, blueberries, pomegranates, cherries and blackberries.

Vegetables

Your immune system will likely need a boost after any surgeries you need as a result of your personal injury. Eat plenty of cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, cabbage and other vegetables. Another food that helps support the immune system are mushrooms, specifically Shiitake, Reishi and Maitakes.

While these foods are a great way to speed up your recovery after a personal injury in Virginia, there is more you can do to improve your situation. Consult with an attorney to explore your legal options and to make a full financial recovery.
