Can stress result in a traffic accident?

540-904-1621

From speeding to traffic congestion, motor vehicle crashes have many different causes. However, it is important for drivers to be aware of some of the other reasons why these accidents, which are often tragic, continue to happen. For example, someone who is under a great deal of stress due to a divorce or work might be more likely to cause a crash, which should serve as a reminder for people to drive safe.

Aside from stress directly causing an accident, it may also contribute to a crash in other ways. For example, someone who is extremely stressed out might drink alcohol or take too much prescription medication as a result of the emotional problems they are facing, leading to intoxicated driving. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, estimates suggest that one out of every 25 drivers over the age of 18 reported that they fell asleep while operating a vehicle in the past 30 days. Someone might be drowsy behind the wheel or even fall asleep because they have not been getting enough sleep due to stress.

There are many different ways in which stress can increase the chances of a car accident and it is pivotal for drivers to stay off the road if they are too stressed out to drive safely or are experiencing another impediment to their driving abilities (intoxication, fatigue, etc.). Sadly, some people choose to drive even though they might be facing a problem that increases the likelihood of a crash, thereby risking innocent lives.
