The dangers of intoxicated truckers

540-904-1621

Many truck accidents that occur on the roads in Roanoke County are avoidable. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Highway Loss Data Institute, many truckers violate federal law and work shifts that are longer than 11 hours. Doing so can result in truckers being too tired to give the roads the attention they deserve. Some of them may resort to using medications, drugs and even alcohol to keep themselves alert. Others may use these substances when they are off work.

The problem arises when they drive their vehicles while they are under the influence of the substances they consume.

Truck accidents often result in serious injuries and death for motorists. The risk of severe injury is much greater when alcohol and certain medications that cause drowsiness are factors. “17 percent of truckers use store bought medications,” states the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Common truck accident injuries include broken bones, fractures, concussions, severe brain and spinal cord trauma and death. Some accident victims sustain injuries that result in temporary and permanent disabilities. Others develop injuries that aggravate underlying health conditions. No matter the kind of injuries that they sustain, many of them are unable to enjoy the same quality of life they had before their accidents.

Trucks are much heavier than passenger vehicles. They require more time and skill to maneuver. Trucks also have blind spots that make it harder for truck drivers to see and avoid colliding into them. Truck drivers who are under the influence of medication or alcohol cannot drive safely. Their reaction times are slower. They are not capable of making proper driving decisions and maintaining proper focus on the roads and their surroundings.

Knowing the dangers that intoxicated truck drivers present can enable motorists to do their part to avoid truck accidents.
