Preventing motorcycle accidents

540-904-1621

Many people ride their motorcycles on Virginia roads in order to enjoy the beauty of the state or to travel from one place to another unencumbered. However, with the numbers of motorcyclists increasing every day, the risk of being involved in an accident increases.

To ensure that they are not involved in a serious accident, most motorcycle riders avoid drunk driving, speeding or driving without a valid license. State authorities also ensure that motorcycle riders have completed the mandatory rider education course and that they follow all the laws related to motorcycle riding.

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveals that more motorcyclists have been using helmets over the last few years. This helps minimize the risk of injury, especially to their heads. However, all helmets must be certified to ensure maximum safety. It is estimated that almost 1,900 lives were saved in 2008 because of motorcycle helmets, and an additional 823 lives could have been saved if all motorcyclists had worn helmets. It was also reported that some people who were involved in crashes did not have a valid license. Other factors that contributed to motorcycle accidents were impaired driving and speeding.

In the event of an accident, motorcycle riders can suffer serious injuries. This is because despite the fact that they may have been wearing a helmet, motorcycle riders remain very vulnerable on the road. Many riders can suffer broken bones, spinal cord injuries and brain injuries. They may need continual medical treatment and rehabilitation in order to overcome the effects of the accident. While medical treatment can be very expensive, the law allows the victim to seek compensation for their losses. This can help the motorcycle accident victim concentrate on recovery without being worried about the financial future.
