Chesterfield County car accident results in one fatality

Any sort of a Virginia mishap on the road can have horrifying consequences, especially when a fatality occurs. They can happen for a number of reasons, including mechanical failures, driver fatigue or negligence on the part of one or more of the drivers. As Roanoke, Virginia, residents may know, it is generally expected that all drivers maintain reasonable caution on the roads, especially when driving in traffic. In some cases, though, even such awareness is not enough to prevent accidents.

A recent car accident on the Varina-Enon Bridge, which is part of I-295 in Chesterfield County, Virginia, occurred when a semi-truck hit a stalled car and resulted in the death of the car's driver. The truck's driver was not injured in the crash. According to the police, the driver of the semi-truck could not determine that the car was stopped, partly because no hazard lights or brake lights were on. The truck driver could not prevent the truck from colliding with the car that subsequently caught fire and killed the driver.

Given the condition of the car, the police have not pressed any charges against the truck driver. It is, however, not known why the car stalled. As a result of the accident, which occurred in the afternoon, several lanes of the freeway were closed for a few hours on both the northbound and southbound side, causing traffic to back up for as much as two miles at one point.

Whatever the reasons for the car's sudden stopping, the incident highlights the risks faced by drivers, especially on freeways. On these specially marked routes, vehicles tend to move at higher speeds, making collisions much more dangerous and increasing the likeliness of fatalities. This makes continued caution on the part of drivers not just advisable, but necessary.
