Helpful safety tips for pedestrians on Halloween

With tomorrow being Halloween, we find it appropriate to remind our readers of the importance of safe driving. Children from across the metro area will be dressed up to canvass neighborhoods in search of candy tomorrow evening. With so many little ones on the streets, drivers should take extra precautions so that kids will make it home safely.

There is consistent data to support this warning. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pedestrian accidents spike on October 31 of each year. As such, we offer a few tips for trick-or-treaters and drivers alike.

Limit alcohol consumption – It may seem like common sense not to drink and drive, but it is surprising how many drunk driving arrests police make each year on Halloween. An intoxicated driver is an immediate danger to children.

Avoid walking and texting – Parents who are supervising children should limit the time they are staring into phones. A person who may not be paying attention could unknowingly walk in front of a car. The same applies to people who are behind the wheel. Texting and driving is not only a bad idea, it is illegal.

Be wary of intersections – At four-way stops and intersections with stoplights, cars are supposed to give pedestrians the right of way, but there are instances where the driver does not see a pedestrian. Because of this, pedestrians should be careful at intersections.

Be sure to be seen – If your costume can accommodate reflective tape or small LED lights, that would be ideal. Otherwise, a bright colored costume can help drivers see you in the dark.
